Building a Professional Twitter Profile

Blog posted On February 10, 2015

Twitter can be one of the trickier social media platforms to use in a professional manner. Based on a fast-paced, constant flow of information and updates, Twitter is focused on starting conversations and spreading news at a second’s notice.

So what’s the best way to start up a professional Twitter profile and establish your business on this platform? Follow these tips to get started:

Professional Photo – Use a professional headshot as your Twitter picture. Avoid inappropriate images and photos that do not resemble you.

Informational About Section – Twitter only allows 160-characters for your About section so choose your words carefully! Use industry-relevant vocabulary and throw in an interesting fact about yourself. Highlight your years of experience and background to establish rapport with your audience immediately.

Research Hashtags – Find hashtags (#) that are trending or relevant to your business and be sure to include them in your posts. #Mortgage #MortgageNews #Home #Finance - You get the picture. Join conversations by using one to three of these per post.

Follow Other Professionals – Following other professionals allows you to see what others in the industry are talking about and how they are engaging people online. Join the conversation by commenting on their posts or retweeting the topics that grab your attention. Most professionals will follow you back and thereby grow your audience. The more people you can connect with, the further your posts will reach.

Do Not Link Social Media Profiles – Most social media profiles now have the option for you to link your accounts to cut back on time spent online and posting. However, each platform is unique and has a very specific way it should be used. Not every tweet belongs on your Facebook profile. Not every tweet should be posted to your LinkedIn. Keep them separate. It may take longer but taking the extra step will make you look like an expert on social media.

News and updates come quickly. Twitter allows you to remain on top of it all and constantly be part of the conversation. Remember to maintain a level of professionalism in everything you post; you are building a reputation as you build your Twitter presence.
