How to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

Blog posted On August 30, 2017

Last weekend, Texans faced the worst hurricane in recorded history when Hurricane Harvey ravaged the coast.  Weather analysts are reporting over 11 trillion gallons of rain fell across over Southeastern Texas.  Thirty-three counties are under a disaster declaration, and 30,000 people are expected to be seeking temporary shelter due to flood damage.

On Friday, President Trump declared Texas a disaster area, allowing the disbursement of federal funding to aid relief efforts.  As of Wednesday, 107,000 homes were without power.  Americans across the country are coming together to help the impacted community.  Here are some of the organizations helping with relief efforts:

Airbnb

The short-term rental service is allowing hosts in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio to list spaces for free.

American Red Cross

In addition to mobilizing volunteers on the scene, American Red Cross has activated a text to donate line.  Text 90999 to donate $10.

Austin Pets Alive!

Pets are in need too!  The organization has already moved 235 animals and counting to shelters.  Volunteers are needed to donate, foster, adopt, or assist with transportation.

Feeding Texas

Food banks across the state are accepting donations to feed displaced residents and others impacted by the storm.

South Texas Blood and Tissue Center

With many hospitals facing storm related challenges, the area is in urgent need of blood and tissue donations.  Interested donors can find a donation center through this organization.

Texas Diaper Bank

Small children, the elderly, and the disabled are facing supply constraints.  To make a donation visit the Texas Diaper Bank’s website.
