Ultra-Affordable Housing

Hex House, not to be confused with the Tulsa’s most terrifying haunted attraction of the same name, is an affordable housing solution that reduces the cost of design and construction.  Each home is assembled on-site, by the buyer, much like do-it-yourself furniture.

Each two-bedroom, 450-square-foot home kit costs approximately $15,000.  Comprised of galvanized tube steel for the base, and insulated metal panel walls, floor, and roof, the finished product is lightweight yet weather resistant.  The homes differ from other emergency shelters because they are designed for long-term habitation.  It looks and feels more like a permanent structure than a temporary solution.

In a statement, the design team from Architects for Society says, “As a group of allied professionals from the US, Europe and the Middle East, AFS is a non-profit design practice with a mission to enhance the built environment of disadvantaged communities through innovative architecture and design.”

Described as “rapidly deployable” and “sustainable,” Hex House is an innovative solution to finding long-term housing for victims of natural disaster, war, or those in refugee situations.
