Tips for Surviving the Holiday Season

Blog posted On November 17, 2014

The holidays are known for sending people running for the woods from stress, exhaustion, and the whirlwind of a hectic time of year. Avoid feeling drained by following these steps to an enjoyable and magical season.

Plan Ahead. Are you throwing a party? Hosting guests? Will you be cooking or baking for a crowd? Send out invitations early, clean and decorate your home, and stock up on items you will need for any events or dishes.

Keep A Calendar. Make sure to write down all events, parties, and commitments on one calendar. Prevent overlapping and overbooking by organizing your time efficiently and with realistic expectations. You probably won’t make it to three holiday dinners on the same evening so reconsider before you check that “accept” box.

Set A Budget. The holiday season is a time for giving – and therefore becomes an expensive time of year. Set a budget and stick to it! Determine how much you will spend on food, family gifts, friends’ gifts, and other such necessities for the holidays. Don’t start the New Year off wondering why your bank account looks pathetic. Set a realistic budget and keep track of your expenses to avoid overspending.

Enjoy the Moment. Always take a second to step back from it all and create a mental picture. Don’t let the holidays pass you by without taking the time to enjoy your guests, family, and the magic of the season. You will appreciate your hard work more later if you can remember the payoff.

Rejuvenate. Don’t forget to schedule some “me” time at the end of the year. Celebrate surviving the holiday season with a quiet, relaxing day.

Before you know it, you will have made it through the holiday season in one piece. Hopefully you will have made some great memories and have entertaining stories to share for years to come.
