Tips for Repurposing Old Furniture

Blog posted On February 29, 2016

What is now becoming a hot fashion trend can also be your next hobby as well as a fantastic way to decorate your home for cheap. Here are some tips for repurposing old furniture.

Shop Around – It’s amazing what we pass by in our normal busy lives. Not only are antique shops and consignment centers full of hidden treasures but also so is your neighbor’s garage sale right down the street. So often we walk right past items and only take them for face value instead of their potential.

Stripping – Old paint, stickers, and glue can seemingly have destroyed a piece. Until you start sanding it down and beautiful wood appears beneath all those layers of years of love. Strip down the piece of furniture to see its true potential. You may be surprised and the coat of paint you had planned may not even be necessary.

Paint – After stripping off old paint and sanding down rough edges, a bright coat of paint could bring new life to an old piece. Whether you put on a glossy coat to bring out the richness of the original wood or splatter it with bright and unique colors to create a piece of furniture that is the accent for a room, a little painting goes a long way.

New Accents – Maybe your find looks beautiful as is but you just want to repurpose a little of it. Consider heading to your thrift store, hardware store, or craft store to browse through unique handles and knobs to swap out. Repurposing furniture doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul.

Unique Uses – Did you pick up a dresser that you’ve redone? Part of repurposing old furniture means not always using it for its intended purpose. Make it a bookshelf. Turn an old chest into a mini garden. An old armoire can now be used to store elegant china or treasured keepsakes.

Have some fun with repurposing furniture. There is no right or wrong way to take on this hobby. Enjoy making a piece that suits you, your lifestyle, and your plans for sprucing up a room.
