Company Holiday Party Etiquette

Blog posted On December 07, 2015

The festivities are upon us and many of our calendars are now full of celebrations, dinners, and cocktail parties. Here are some “rules” to follow when attending your company holiday party to ensure you maintain a level of professionalism while still enjoying yourself.

Drinks – Don’t be the employee that makes a fool out of himself or herself by drinking too much. Not only will it harm your reputation, it could affect your employment status on Monday. Indulge in a couple drinks and be sure to incorporate lots of water and food throughout the night to prevent any sudden onslaughts of drunkenness.

Attire – Dress appropriately. Just because it is a party does not mean all rules go out the window. Have a little fun with the festivities by wearing something sparkly, colorful, or fun but don’t take it to the next level and come in an outfit that is inappropriate.

Small Talk – Oh, the wonderful game of small talk. Whether it’s a conversation you enjoy or not, remember to remain polite and refrain from becoming argumentative. Think of a polite way to excuse yourself from groups before the evening begins so you can mingle throughout the evening. Come up with a list of entertaining topics you can all discuss that are inclusive and won’t start heated debates.

Guests – Always check to make sure guests are welcome before showing up with a plus one. Properly download all information to your guest about the festivities they will be enjoying with you so they know what to expect.

Company holiday parties are intended to be a fun way to celebrate the holidays and a great way for a company to show they appreciate their employees for their hard work all year. Remember to keep a professional face on while enjoying the party.
